Overview
This was a hackathon project that was fantastical and supernatural. It looked at supporting a human sense or feeling that was typically not tracked before. Our project looked at tracking the sense of Deja Vu. (This project is fantastical and deja vu is not an actual sense that is able to be tracked - yet.)
Introduction
For the majority, déjà vu is simply a lingering sensation prompting curiosity. But for people who suffer from temporal epilepsy, dementia, and memory deterioration distinguishing between new experiences and real memories can be difficult (Aitken et al., 2023). A new experience may feel familiar. A real memory may feel uncertain.
What is Clarity?
Clarity aims to help people with cognitive impairments by helping them keep track of their memories. Clarity differentiates between moments of deja vu and false familiarity (memory glitches). By showing this data, we hope to bring confidence back into our users daily lives, allow for easy tracking of experiences for personal or medical use, and encourage people to take start early preventative measures to prevent brain decline.
How does Clarity work?
Clarity is able to detect moments of deja vu through the Clarity ear cuff. The Clarity software then compares prior memories with the current existing state to determine whether the user is having deja vu or false familiarity.

The data collected is then represented in the Clarity mobile application. The mobile app allows users to receive immediate notifications about their cognitive state.

Reflection
This was a fun project that challenged me to think outside of the box. Deja vu is a fantastical almost supernatural like feeling that is hard to pin point. It was difficult to find ways to visualize something that isn’t really meant to be visualized. I drew a lot of inspiration from existing health tracking apps. This project allowed me to play around with Figma in ways that I hadn’t really had the opportunity to before and just visualize more of how it would be used in the real world.
